Botkin Hospital admitted its first patients back in 1910; it is one of the oldest clinics in the city. Honorary citizen of Moscow Kozma Terentyevich Soldatenkov gave two million roubles for the construction of a "free hospital without distinction of ranks, class and religions". The hospital bore his name till 1920, when it was renamed Botkin Hospital in honor of the founder of the Russian therapeutic school – Sergei Petrovich Botkin.
Botkin today is the biggest multispeciality hospital in Moscow, that occupies almost 20 hectares of land in the city center on the Khodynka Field. Every fourteenth patient in the capital receives inpatient care here: almost 100 thousand people are treated in Botkin Hospital every year.
In the Botkin Hospital patients can receive all kinds of specialized and high-tech medical care in more than 90 departments. Such types of treatment as surgery, urology, gynecology, cardiovascular surgery, traumatology and orthopedics, neurosurgery, ophthalmology, otorhinolaryngology and maxillofacial surgery, therapy and pulmonology, neurology, cardiology, nephrology are available to them. Priority directions of surgical profile are general surgery, oncology surgery, liver and pancreas surgery, urology, laparoscopic surgery, and robotic surgery.
The Botkin Hospital is one of the most well-equipped in Moscow. At the disposal of its medics there are 70 operating theaters (including 5 for emergency surgeries), where about 70 thousand surgeries are being performed per year, most of them are laparoscopic. Every eighth operation belongs to the category of high-tech medical care. 10% of surgeries per year are classified as high-tech medical care. The hospital has 67 ultrasound machines, of which 22 are expert class, endoscopic expert class equipment, 7 modern computer tomographs, 4 magnetic resonance scanners, 4 angiography machines, 48 hemodialysis machines. At the end of 2013, the surgical system Da Vinci SI appeared in the hospital. Since then hospital has performed more than 250 robotic-assisted surgeries per year.
But the main thing is a strong medical team. When dealing with a complex condition medics of various specialty arrange themselves in multidisciplinary crew. Many medics of the Botkin hospital combine work with teaching at the Russian Medical Academy of Continuous Professional Education (RMANPO). The Botkin team of specialists includes 5 members of the Russian Academy of Sciences, 100 professors, 117 Doctors of Medical Sciences and 280 Candidates of Medical Sciences. Doctors and nurses periodically undergo training in leading foreign clinics in Germany, Belgium, Israel, South Korea and Switzerland.
